An analogous color distribution is characteristic of natural amethyst crystals. We have defined closely the formation conditions for amethyst crystals in this system, and have compared some physical properties of synthetic and natural amethyst.

Compounds with this structure have been found also in silicate systems, and replacement of Si by Ge hardly alters the Zn-O-Si (Ge) angle: the mean angle for Si is 125°, while that for Ge is 124°. The framework elasticity is related to the sodium, and this is confirmed by the possibility of replacing the Zn by Co, Fe, and various other valent elements. On the other hand, replacement of Na by other alkali cations does not always result in a D structure; for instance, in a chain of K polyhedra there are no elements comparable with the (Zn + Ge)07 group and the D type K phase is not formed in the Zn -Ge system.
