The natural bond between the various layers is generally not good and adhesive films, applied between these various layers, are used to improve the bond. If thermoplastic sheets or 'tensile' members are placed under a load the material behaves viscoelastically with a gradually decreasing slope of the stress-strain relationship. At a limiting load value, the material will be unable to support further load and will commence to elongate excessively.

The principal processing methods for the production of thermoplastic polymers are: • extrusion • injection • moulding • thermoforming • calendering. One of the most important manufacturing processes for the production of thermoplastic polymers is extrusion. The thermoplastic polymer is invariably in granular or powder form and is placed in a hopper which then passes into a rotating screw which is inside a heated barrel. The screw channel depth is reduced along the barrel so that the material is compacted and at the extremity of the extruder, the melt passes through to produce the finished article.
