Lessons are delivered in a partnership between library and classroom faculty. Librarians also work with and through the classroom faculty to deliver and assess instruction. Using this partnership, the librarians administer an information literacy pretest to new first-year students on the first day of fall term in the English composition classes and a posttest in the required sophomore seminar classes. The pretest/posttest sequence provides a baseline for librarians and classroom faculty to examine student information literacy achievement during the first year.

Offered at the college’s technology-centric campus, Seneca@York, the program is supported by extensive library collections, that were started in 1999, with the opening of the campus. The collections are strong in current resources, with some weaknesses in older, out-of-print materials. Fortunately, the Seneca@York campus is located on the Experiential Learning: Teach Them and They Will Come 23 main campus of York University, and Seneca students have limited access to York University’s many libraries with relevant holdings dating back over four decades.

7 It is not something that can be acquired in one lecture or one course. In the planning phase, it was obvious that from a practical perspective, multiple class sessions were not possible. Class meeting time is limited and synchronizing schedules is almost impossible given the range of librarian responsibilities and workloads. Two solutions were used to address this challenge. First, Seneca librarians would orient faculty to library resources, on a regular basis, to ensure that they could successfully integrate information literacy skills and knowledge into their classes when and wherever appropriate.
