1 Using a surveyor’s level The most accurate ground-level measurements are obtained by using a surveyor’s level. That is essentially a telescope mounted on an adjustable base that enables the line of sight through the telescope to be maintained in a horizontal plane. Ground levels are measured against this horizontal line, using a levelling staff – a sort of long telescopic ruler. The elevation of each location is measured against the starting point, where either the elevation above sea level is already known or where you have decided to use as a site datum point.

Great confusion can be caused in the field when the dipper works at the surface but fails down the borehole. In these circumstances, improvise a dipper that ‘feels’ the water surface (see below). Do not add salt to the water in the borehole, even though this will increase the conductivity and enable the electric dipper to work. Such action will alter the groundwater chemistry and in some countries may be illegal. When making water-level measurements in wells or boreholes that are used for water supplies ensure you adhere to both the hygiene and safety precautions given in Appendix I.
