If you’ve ever considered signing up for Super Duolingo, but you’re not a fan of the price, then you might want to consider getting yourself onto a Duolingo Family Plan.
The Family Plan has been around for a while now and has made Duolingo’s premium features more accessible than ever.
But what exactly is Duolingo’s Family Plan? How much does it cost? How does it work? And is it worth it?

What is the Duolingo Family Plan?
The Duolingo Family Plan allows Duolingo users to share their Super Duolingo subscription with up to 5 other users.
This means that, in total, you can have up to 6 Duolingo users on a Family Plan.
You can share a Family Plan with anyone you like, be they family, friends, or even complete strangers you’ve met on the internet!
The idea of the Family Plan is to reduce the overall cost of a Super Duolingo subscription. While the single up-front cost of a Family Plan is more than an individual subscription, if you split the cost with your plan members, you’ll all end up making a sizable saving!
The Duolingo Family Plan is currently available on all platforms, meaning IOS, Android, and desktop users can all get in on the action.
What do you get with the Duolingo Family Plan?
The Duolingo Family Plan comes with all the standard benefits of Super Duolingo. Everything you get with an individual Super Duolingo subscription you’ll also get with a Family Plan subscription.

How much does a Duolingo Family Plan cost?
As with an individual Super Duolingo subscription, the cost of a Duolingo Family Plan will depend upon where you are in the world.
At the moment, there is no monthly payment option, so you will need to pay on an annual basis.
Occasionally Duolingo will run discounts, special offers and even free trials for the Family Plan, however, in my experience, special offers usually only extend to individual Super Duolingo plans.
US price
The Duolingo Family Plan currently costs $119.99 per year in the US.
This works out at an extra $3 per month (or $32 over the course of the year) over an individual Super Duolingo subscription.
UK price
The Duolingo Family Plan currently costs £89.99 per year in the UK.
This works out at an extra £2.50 per month (or £30 over the course of the year) over an individual Super Duolingo subscription.
Canada price
The Duolingo Family Plan currently costs $149.99 per year in Canada.
This works out at an extra $2.50 per month (or $30 over the course of the year) over an individual Super Duolingo subscription.
Australia price
The Duolingo Family Plan currently costs $174.99 per year in Australia.
This works out at an extra $3.75 per month (or $45 over the course of the year) over an individual Super Duolingo subscription.
EU price
The Duolingo Family Plan currently costs €122.99 per year in the EU.
This works out at an extra $2.91 per month (or $34.92 over the course of the year) over an individual Super Duolingo subscription.
Duolingo Family Plan discounts and trials
It’s not uncommon for Duolingo to drop some decent discounts and free trials for the Family Plan.
Usually, first-time subscribers will get as many as 14 days free to try the Family Plan out.
Duolingo also like to throw around some discounts to entice you in. In December 2022, for instance, they offered a 20% discount to individual Super users, which meant the Family Plan actually worked out CHEAPER for the year than an individual plan.
You might also find that Duolingo will offer different prices to different accounts.
For instance, I upgraded my main account to the Family Plan for £105.99 in the UK.
However, when I checked the upgrade price on my test account, it was only £89.99.
It might have been because I was already a Super subscriber on my main account, so it could be that free users get a reduced price for their first year.
How to start or upgrade to a Duolingo Family Plan
Getting started with a Duolingo Family Plan is really easy.
Whether you’re a free member or a Super subscriber, follow these steps to start your Family Plan.
Note, these steps only apply if YOU plan to be the head of the Family Plan, meaning you’re going to be the one paying the yearly subscription!
First, open up Duolingo. In this example, I’ll be using the IOS app, but it should work pretty much the same on whichever platform you’re using.
The next step will depend on whether you’re a free or Super member. If you’re a free member, head over to the shop by either tapping the gems icon (mobile) or clicking the shop icon (desktop).
If you’re already a Super subscriber, head over to your Super dashboard.
You’ll then want to look for the option to upgrade to Super, or, if you’re a current Super subscriber, upgrade to a Family Plan.
Simply tap or click through to process the upgrade. You may or may not be offered a discount or free trial, depending on your current plan, where you are in the world, and whether or not Duolingo are running any special offers.
Once you’ve entered your payment details and confirmed the upgrade, your Family Plan will be ready to go! You’ll get a little walkthrough of what you get, and then you’ll be invited to start adding your friends and family.
How to share your Duolingo Family Plan
The great thing about the Duolingo Family Plan is that you can share it with pretty much anyone. It’s not just limited to family members or people you live with — you can share it with friends, colleagues, or even complete strangers if you really want to.
To share your Family Plan, all you need is to send your special invite code to whoever it is you want to join.
You can access this by heading over to your Family Plan and selecting ‘add members’.
If you’re using the mobile app you’ll be given the option to either send your link out in a text message, or you can tap ‘more options’ to share on other platforms. Alternatively, you can just copy the invite link and ping it out however you like.
Whoever it is you’ve invited will need to then click or tap on the link, which will take them to Duolingo. If all goes according to plan, they should get a pop-up inviting them to join your Family Plan.
How to manage your Family Plan
Managing your Duolingo Family Plan is really easy.
To do so, head over to your Super Duolingo hub. There you will find your Family Plan.
Tap ‘manage’ in the top right corner and you’ll be able to add and remove members.
Can you change your family manager?
Members of a Family Plan will have one of two statuses: Family Manager and Member.
There can only be one family manager in a plan. Everyone else will be a member.
The family manager has the ability to add and remove family members from the plan.
At this time, there is no way of changing the family manager. The family manager will always be the one that set up and is paying for the plan.
Duolingo Family Plan not working
It’s not uncommon to run into problems and glitches with the Duolingo Family Plan. I’ve experienced some of these myself!
Here are some of the most common issues:
Invites don’t work
One of the most common issues with the Family Plan is that sometimes the invites don’t work.
I experienced this just after setting up my Family Plan. I sent out an invite, but, for some reason, the person I was sending it to wasn’t getting the option to accept it.
It’s not entirely clear as to why this happens. However, it looks like it might have something to do with the platform you send the invite on.
Initially, I was sending the invite over Messenger, but it only worked after sending it out over iMessage.
So if you’re having these kinds of issues, consider sending out your invites over different messaging platforms.
You’re already a Super subscriber
If you’re already a Super subscriber then you may run into some problems. However, this depends on how you’re trying to upgrade to a Family Plan.
If you intend to be the Family Manager — i.e. you’re going to be the one paying for the plan — then you shouldn’t have too many difficulties. Once you upgrade, Duolingo will refund you for the remaining time left on your individual Super subscription.
However, if you’re already a Super subscriber and someone invites you to their Family Plan, then you won’t be able to join until your current subscription expires.
Beta testing
You might also run into problems if you’re using the Duolingo beta app.
I noticed that I wasn’t able to accept promotions or even sign up to the Family Plan when I was running the beta on TestFlight (IOS), so I had to uninstall it and re-install the standard version from the App Store.
Once I did this everything went through smoothly!
Is the Duolingo Family Plan worth it?
With all this in mind, is the Duolingo Family Plan worth it?
As with all questions of this kind, the answer will depend entirely on your personal circ*mstances.
If you’re not a fan of Super Duolingo then I doubt the Family Plan will change your mind. You don’t get anything extra on top of an individual Super Duolingo subscription. All the features are exactly the same.
If these don’t appeal to you, then the Family Plan probably won’t float your boat.
Unless…
You have a family member or friend who IS a Super Duolingo user and would be willing to share their subscription with you, either by splitting the cost via the Family Plan or letting you use it completely for free.
And this, ultimately, is where the value of the Family Plan lies: it makes Super Duolingo more accessible to those who wouldn’t otherwise subscribe. So whether you choose to split the cost 2-ways, 3-ways or even 6-ways, you will make a big saving over going for an individual subscription.
Look, I make no secret of the fact that I’m a big fan of Super Duolingo. Sure, I think it could use a few more features to justify the price. But on the whole, given how much I use Duolingo, the yearly fee is a no-brainer.
But with the Family Plan on top, I can now spread the cost across several users, meaning not only do I save on something I would subscribe to anyway, but I can also get more people on board for a seriously reduced price.
Overall, it just depends on your situation. If you don’t like Super, then the Family Plan will only be worth it if someone shares their plan with you for free. However, if you do like Super or would be interested in it at a reduced price, then the Family Plan is a great option.
