I love apples. They are just so juicy and sweet and good for you! I was recently sent a box of Pazazz apples to try in the hopes that I would share them on the blog. They were in fact delicious so I decided to whip up an apple crisp recipe with fresh apples to share with y’all. What is really unique about these all-new Pazazz apples is that unlike other apples, they are grown to peak in flavor during the colder winter months so you can get fresh apples longer. As far as the Pazazz apple taste- it is a descendent of the Honeycrisp so it is really sweet, crisp, and flavorful. This apple crisp recipe with fresh apples and oats is so easy to make and so good!

This Easy Apple Crisp With Fresh Apples Is Scrumptious!

So first you will want to gather up your ingredients. I skipped this step and found out part way through that I was actually out of brown sugar and had to run to the store. The only problem with husbands that cook is they sometimes use things up and don’t tell you, well, that and the mess! So anyway, gather up your ingredients.

Ingredients:

  • 6 large fresh apples or about 2 pounds of apples (doesn’t need to be exact)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice
  • 1.5 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup salted butter (you could substitute coconut oil for a healthier version but I like the taste of the butter better)
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp white sugar

I used the Pazazz apples and I think they are good for baking because they are sweet, tart, and have a nice firm flesh. You can use any apples you want really but these did work very well. Pazzaz apples are grown where they get cool nights so in places like Washington, Minnesota, Wisconsin; upstate New York and even in Nova Scotia by the Bay of Fundy. I think that cool night air helps give them that nice crisp flesh when you bite into them. They are perfect for apple desserts.

How To Make Apple Crisp With Fresh Apples And Oats:

The first step in making this homemade apple crisp is to preheat oven to 375 degrees. Grease a 9 by 13 inch pyrex baking dish or similar size.

How to cut apples for apple crisp

Cut apples in half and remove cores. Then slice halves into about 4 sections each so when you slice these sections up you will have bite sized pieces when you slice apples.Make sure your final apple slices are pretty thin so they will cook quickly and come out soft and tender. Place your sliced apples into a large bowl.

Sprinkle lemon juice, white sugar, and vanilla over the apples and toss. Lemon juice adds a layer of flavor and helps to keep the apples from turning brown while they wait. I also sprinkled a tad bit of cinnamon onto the apples here because my daughter just loves cinnamon and wanted it to be extra cinnamony. Pour the apple mixture into a large oven-safe baking dish. You could use melted butter to grease the dish first if you desire but I don’t find that the juicy apples prevent it from sticking so I usually skip that step.

How To Make The Crisp Topping

Combine old-fashioned oats, flour, brown sugar, and cinnamon with small cubed bits of cold butter. Or throw all five of your dry ingredients into a food processor for about 1 minute until the butter looks like crumbles. I do it in the food processor because I love the even texture and I like the oats in the oat topping to be broken up a bit. Either way works just fine for your crumble topping.

Pour this flour crisp mixture on top of the apples and smooth with a spoon to create an even top. I sprinkle a few extra whole oats on top of the apple filling for looks but that is optional.

Pop your apple dish into the oven for about 35 minutes and it should come out all perfectly crispy and slightly browned. As the apples cooked they will have released apple juices that will have made a lovely light sauce under the crispy oat layer. The Pazazz apples come out slightly pink and pretty! Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream, if you like.
