Piping Classes Specification - (2)The First Post: https://lnkd.in/dHRPS7Mb(*) Each Piping Class contains a list of Piping Components that are selected and prepared to be used by the Piping Designer or Piping Design Engineer during their design work.(*) When mentioning Selection, we mainly refer to:- Type of Construction- Type of End Connection- Design and Dimension Standard- Material Standard- Testing Standard- and more...(*) Each Material Standard (e.g. ASTM standards) has a different set of requirements. Some Material Standards only cover Seamless types, while others cover both Seamless and Welded types. Additionally, some of them cover a certain type of welding. Therefore, the Specs Engineer must fully understand the Material Standard before specifying it.(*) Each base material has a different set of grade combinations based on the forms and alloys. This should be understood by the Specs Engineer. For example, if the Pipes material is ASTM A106 GR.B, you should be aware that the Forged form will be ASTM A105, the Wrought form should be ASTM A234 GR. (*) The Piping Classes Specification is a vital document in the project lifecycle.(*) The Piping Classes Specification normally contains at least the following sections:- General Overview- Fluid List- Wall Thickness Tables- Branch Tables- Components Description- Special Notes(*) Many companies have their general Piping Classes that they use in almost all projects due to the similarity between projects, while many other companies create a piping class specification for each project.(*) The creation of Piping Class Specifications requires in-depth knowledge in the areas of Codes, Standards, Industry Practices, and Manufacturers' Practices.(*) Piping Classes are involved in:- 3D Model- Technical Procurement Activities- Inspection Activities- PO Preparation and others- and more... (*) The selection of Base Material is the responsibility of the Material Selection and Corrosion team and/or the Process Team based on the company's philosophy.

Who is Piping Material Engineer?In his acclaimed book, “Piping Materials Guide” renowned piping expert Peter Smith defines the Piping Material Engineer (PME) and their responsibilities as follows:“The piping engineer, the individual responsible for creating the project piping classes and the numerous piping specifications necessary to fabricate, test, insulate, and paint the piping systems, is titled either the piping material engineer or the piping specification writer.The piping material engineer’s responsibilities vary from company to company. Here is a list of typical functions that he or she is expected to perform:. Develop the project piping classes for all process and utility services.. Write specifications for fabrication, shop and field testing, insulation, and painting.. Create and maintain all data sheets for process and utility valves.. Create a list of piping specials, such as hoses and hose couplings, steam traps, interlocks.. Create and maintain data sheets for these piping special (SP) items.. Assemble a piping material requisition with all additional documents.. Review offers from vendors and create a technical bid evaluation.. Make a technical recommendation.. After placement of a purchase order, review and approve documentation from vendors related to piping components.. When required, visit the vendor’s premises to attend kickoff meetings, the testing of piping components, or clarification meetings..
