No prize for guessing, but the Big Four Winds/Big Four Blessings winning hand is said to have the lowest probability in a game of mahjong. With a rare 1 in 57,856 chance of happening, this combination must go onto your Instastory!

The general strategy is to keep removing matching tiles so that each removal opens up more possibilities for future tile matching. If you have a pair that does not open anything, leave it until you need it. Don't forget that you should open up new tiles with every matched pair.

Keep an eye on similar tiles on top of each other

Whenever it is possible to identify two similar tiles on top of each other, solving them should become a priority. Otherwise, these may lead to an unsolvable puzzle. If those two tiles are the only ones left out of their symbol/suit to be matched, the game will be lost.

American mah-jongg is hard because you can only play the hands listed on the current year's card (purchased through the National Mah Jongg League). It's quite a challenge to find possibilities for hands from among a random 13 or 14 tiles.

The American game is the most difficult one to learn. If you start by learning basic Chinese mah-jongg principles first, you can easily learn any other form of mah-jongg. Japanese, Filipino, Western, Wright-Patterson... all evolved from the Chinese, so it's best to start by learning this basic form.

Heavenly hand should not occur more often than once every 18000 deals. Accuracy of that estimate is bad. In reality it is rarer.
