Raspberry Mojito Recipe

Is it 5pm on Friday yet? Surely happy hour is almost here because this raspberry mojito is calling to me. A great happy hour starts with a great co*cktail. And when the summer temperatures are starting to kick in, there had better be something cool and refreshing at hand to ease you into the weekend. In the past, a Fresh Strawberry Tom Collins or a Pink Grapefruit Margarita valiantly competed for my affections.

Well, now there's a new sheriff in town.

I remember drinking my first mojito like it was yesterday. My husband and I were living in New York City and some of my girlfriends came for a visit. We hopped from museum to museum, restaurant to restaurant, eventually landing at Tavern on the Green on the edge of Central Park. One of my girlfriends had just spent several months working in the Caribbean, a little more than a stone's throw from Cuba, the birthplace of the mojito. As we sat on the patio of Tavern on the Green on a steamy summer's day, she insisted that we order a round of classic co*cktails. Twist my arm!

Tart, sweet, cold and refreshing, my first sip of the mojito lived up to everything my friend claimed. Muddled mint leaves and lime wedges gave it a wonderfully fresh flavor, and the shot of the rum eased me right into relaxation mode.

So, as soon I knew my friend would be coming for a visit a few weeks ago, I knew that mojitos had to be on the menu. I took all of the classic elements of a mojito, then added a handful of fresh raspberries for a pop of color and an extra dose of summertime flavors.

Suffice to say that I've found a clear winner in the summer co*cktail category.

What is in a mojito?

  • A classic mojito recipe includes ice, limes, mint, sugar, club soda and white rum (let's not forget the rum).
  • In this recipe, I swapped out the sugar and replaced it with agave nectar. Honey would work, too.
  • To add a summertime twist, I muddled some fresh raspberries with the lime and mint. Blackberries would also be a great option. I find that the end of a wooden spoon (not the spoon part) does the trick.

What alcoholic mojito? ›

The co*cktail often consists of five ingredients: white rum, sugar (traditionally sugar cane juice), lime juice, soda water, and mint. Its combination of sweetness, citrus, and herbaceous mint flavors is intended to complement the rum, and has made the mojito a popular summer drink.

Are mojitos high in alcohol? ›

How Strong Is the Mojito? The mojito is not a terribly strong co*cktail. When made with 80-proof rum, the alcohol content falls in the 13 percent ABV (26 proof) range. That makes it equivalent to a glass of wine, only far more refreshing.

A funky twist on a Cuban classic – Funkin Raspberry Mojito Mixer is a delicious mix of Chilean and Serbian raspberries, fresh mint and lime. Make one up in minutes for instant enjoyment. Just add rum and ice, shake, and garnish with raspberry, lime and mint.

Can you get drunk off one mojito? ›

Mojitos have, in my experience, an average amount of alcohol for a co*cktail; typically one ounce of rum. For a person with low alcohol tolerance, one mojito can cause tipsiness, sure.

Should you use crushed ice in a mojito? ›

Do use crushed ice in your mojitos. Crushed ice will melt faster, which is a good thing in a drink with such strong flavors. The extra surface area of crushed ice also means a colder drink. Do not use a pre-made mojito mix out of a bottle.

Why do bartenders stir ice in empty glass? ›

The purpose of stirring a co*cktail, as opposed to shaking, is to agitate the ice as little as possible so the drink has a smooth and even texture without any air bubbles.

What drink is similar to a mojito? ›

Try the queen's park swizzle, a Trinidadian co*cktail that's strikingly similar to the mojito (except for the added Angostura bitters). The daisy de santiago is another lime-forward Cuban co*cktail from the 1920s, but it's much less minty than a mojito, and includes a herby, yellow French liqueur called Chartreuse.

What makes a mojito bitter? ›

The most common mistake in Mojito preparation is too much mudding which results in a bitter flavor. Finally, once you've given it all a good shake, you'll need to use a fine tea strainer to catch all of the mint particles.

Should mojitos be shaken or stirred? ›

This is an issue of debate, with many bartenders insisting to not shake mojitos lest you bruise the delicate mint leaves (which you just muddled....) and release bitterness from them. We disagree! Given the addition of lime into this co*cktail, shaking releases the full flavor of the citrus in ways a simple stir cannot.

Which rum is best for mojito? ›

White Rum: White rum, also known as light rum or silver rum, is a common choice for mojitos. It is generally lighter in flavor and has a cleaner, more neutral taste. White rum allows the fresh flavors of mint and lime to shine through, creating a bright and refreshing mojito.
