Better together. That was the theme for the U.S. Bank Corporate Social Responsibility team offsite last week, and those two days lived up to that promise. We laughed, we learned, we asked thoughtful questions of ourselves and one another, and we reinforced our commitment to the humbling work of strengthening the communities we serve. From digging into the details of community co-design with Gabrielle Grier, M. Ed from the African American Leadership Forum to chatting with bank leaders Tim Welsh, Stephen Philipson, Zack Boyers and Greg Cunningham, MBA Cunningham, to getting our hands dirty (literally!) making seedballs with the help of the Student Conservation Association and UrbanRoots, the offsite was a full-circle moment. We saw how our efforts have an impact inside and outside U.S. Bank, and how the work of our colleagues, partners and friends can inspire us to do even more as we leverage each person’s strengths to succeed as one team. We enjoyed Cookie Cart cookies, sang, danced, cheered and enjoyed one another’s company, too. This magical experience would not have been possible without the enthusiasm and creativity of Denise Dau, Gail Ottmar Garcia, Erica Opstad, Kaori Yamada, Missy Wiggins, Ariel Meyerstein, PhD, Mandy Koehl and Sofia Terzic, MBA , along with the outstanding event planning expertise of Bethany Sherman. And of course, the entire CSR team – I truly honor the gifts that each of you bring to our organization and your communities. I am thankful every day that you choose to make a difference with us. We are truly better together.

The U.S. Bank Magnolia Place Financial Education Center helps us meet and serve community where they are. Flory Martinez provides a welcoming environment for individuals and families who are looking to expand their knowledge and work toward financial stability. I have seen firsthand how the connections she’s made with other organizations serving the community have made a real impact. Thanks to Flory, Kaori Yamada and many others who bring their time and talent to help families build a strong foundation to achieve their financial goals.https://lnkd.in/g7vN7jXB

Listening to and learning from our team and communities is what my job is all about, which made last week’s trip to Phoenix with my fellow U.S. Bank leaders Greg Cunningham, MBA and Zack Boyers so special. We joined the launch of the Nosotros Latinos Business Resource Group Arizona chapter, which took place at the lovely Xico, Inc. community space, and participated in a speed networking event sponsored by our Arizona Development Network Business Resource Group (BRG). I heard from so many colleagues about the value of our BRGs and how they enhance #usbanklife – and I wholeheartedly agree! We had the pleasure of welcoming Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego to our LGBTQ+ flagship branch in Uptown Phoenix, and spent valuable time listening and learning from our friends at Chicanos Por La Causa, Inc. (CPLC), one•n•ten and the Raza Development Fund. I also appreciated the opportunity to visit the Soluna residential community with the team from developer , a long-time client of U.S. Bancorp Impact Finance.Busy days lead to full hearts, and I’m grateful for all who helped immerse us in the community. Many thanks to Arturo Pérez , Rudy Melgoza , Stephanie Cisneros, Ryan Hale, Josh Shade, Dominique Asaad Sims , Garrett Murdock, Diana Cárdenas, Chuck Sinkey and our Arizona BRG leads, in addition to the nonprofit and business partners, branch staff and employees who generously shared their time and thoughts with us.

"The heart is a big muscle. You need to exercise it every day. " - Karen Johnson, CEO of New Pathways for Youth (NPFY). My heart had quite the workout this morning at the NPFY Stories of Transformation breakfast where we heard stories of hope and inspiration from students and their mentors. I was especially moved by the spoken word poets who shared their journeys with courage and grace. If you live in the Phoenix area, please consider giving your time to mentor a young person. The impact of mentorship can literally change the trajectory of a life.I joined our U.S. Bank team (pictured below with Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego) including Josh Shade (incoming NPFY Board Chair), Arturo Pérez, Nick Streff, Christine Nowaczyk, Tim Hoekstra and amazing community partners Brad Vynalek. Dave Brown, Carlos L. Velasco and Koran Hardimon. What a beautiful way to start the day.

Yesterday, I had the privilege of visiting two of our U.S. Bank nonprofit partners withArturo Pérez. We started our afternoon at the Children's Museum Tucson where we met with their inspiring Executive Director, Hilary Van Alsburg, JD (check out the picture of the two of us in front of the huge open mouth display that is a part of one of their interactive exhibits). We talked about our shared belief in the power of play and creativity to help kids (and adults) develop critical skills like perseverance, problem solving and self-confidence supporting their success in school, career and life. And we talked about the importance of inclusion and access. The U.S. Bank Foundation made a multi-year commitment to support an expansion of the museum which will allow more kids and families to access this amazing learning space. We then moved on to Pima Community College where we met with representatives from Earn to Learn including their Executive Director Kate Hoffman (I thought I had a lot of energy and passion until I met Kate). This organization is dedicated to helping students from low to moderate income households enter college and graduate by providing an 8 x 1 funding match (yup 8X1). A student has to save $500 a year and receives $4000 from the program to help defray tuition or other related costs such as housing, food, books etc.The program requires that participants complete financial literacy training (hold for applause) and they have an 85% graduation rate (hold again for applause). I had the pleasure of meeting with a student whose life has been changed by the program and her mentor, a volunteer from the local business community.Earn to Learn is scaling this program to five states and they have national aspirations. U.S. Bank is proud to support both of these organizations with financial and human resources. Thank you to Teresa Brown, one of our Branch Banking Executives who serves on the Board of the Children's Museum and Art who is the Board Chair of Earn to Learn. It was such a good day and a reminder of the importance of spending time with the visionary, hard-working and committed community leaders we support through our work. #CommunityPossible
