This French Toast recipe is a classic recipe made with milk, eggs, vanilla, and cinnamon. This breakfast has the perfect soft center with a crisp golden brown outside. Serve with fresh berries, maple syrup, and whipped cream.

EASY FRENCH TOAST RECIPE

I know this is a basic recipe for French toast but it is the best French toast recipe. I tried all different versions and the ingredients are mostly the same.

Some with more milk, more eggs, less eggs, and this is the winning version with all the flavor. Make this your staple recipe for the weekend.

This is the perfect French toast, with an easy custard mixture made with simple ingredients.

WHAT INGREDIENTS ARE IN FRENCH TOAST?

  • BREAD
  • WHOLE MILK
  • LARGE EGGS
  • VANILLA EXTRACT
  • SUGAR
  • CINNAMON

WHAT IS THE BEST BREAD FOR FRENCH TOAST

The type of bread you use for French toast should be sturdy enough to handle a soaking in milk and eggs. Here are a few options of the best bread for French toast.

You definitely want thick slices of bread. Thinner bread will just get soggy. A lot of people use day-old bread for this. Here are some great options.

  • BRIOCHE BREAD – Has a firm crust but a soft center.
  • SOURDOUGH – I love the contrast of this tangy bread to the sweet French toast.
  • FRENCH BREAD – This is a great bread for soaking since it has a solid crust. This is used for a classic French toast recipe and my personal favorite.
  • WHITE BREAD – This is what most of us have on hand and it works great. It’s usually not precut in very thick slices so don’t soak as long.
  • CHALLAH – Is a softer bread but also works great here.

HOW TO MAKE FRENCH TOAST

First, mix the eggs, milk, vanilla, cinnamon, and pinch of salt in a shallow dish.

Dip bread in the egg mixture for about 3 seconds per side in a shallow bowl.

You don’t want to oversoak them in the batter so that they are super soggy. The center will have a custard like texture but shouldn’t be overly wet.

Melt some butter in a pan over medium heat and cook for 3-4 minutes per side on a skillet or griddle. Place on a wire rack if eating right away.

If you’re making in batches, keep the bread slices warm on a baking sheet in a single layer in the oven at 250 degrees. You can warm in the microwave but they can get soggy. Preferably if eating later you can place them in the toaster to get warm.

DO YOU NEED STALE BREAD FOR FRENCH TOAST?

No. In my opinion, that just makes your French toast taste like stale bread.

SOGGY FRENCH TOAST

If you have soggy French toast it means that you are letting the bread soak too long or are not cooking it long enough.

TOPPINGS FOR FRENCH TOAST

Delicious French toast has a variety of topping options.

  • BUTTER
  • MAPLE SYRUP
  • FRESH FRUIT
  • WHIPPED CREAM – Whip some heavy cream with some sugar for fresh whipped cream.
  • POWDERED SUGAR
  • RASPBERRIES
  • BLUEBERRIES
  • STRAWBERRIES
  • BLACKBERRIES
  • PEACHES
  • SLICED ALMONDS

FREEZING

Cool French toast completely and place in a freezer bag with parchment paper in between the slices. Freeze for up to three months.
To reheat, toast in a toaster or cook on a baking sheet in a single layer for 8-10 minutes at 375 degrees F.

This one is going in my recipe book. The recipe is perfect as written, you just need to follow it. Keys here are quickly dipping the bread, do NOT soak and using a good quality bread like a brioche, or Brownberry, Pepperidge Farm, etc. Definitely keep warm in the oven as stated!

This was a great recipe. I use the Sara Lee Artesano Bread from Costco. I make an entire loaf and freeze it in the original bread bag with cut sheets of wax paper to prevent them from sticking together. Reheat them in the toaster oven, and they are great.

Could you please specify how many slices of bread this is likely to be used for? I am a single person, and would like to know how much to “cut” the recipe for two or four slices of bread; no idea how much they would weigh. Thank you.

    • Christy Denney Reply

Absolutely. 1 lb of bread is about 16 slices.

    • irvin Reply

When you cut the recipe for just a few slices of bread if you end up with more mixture than you have bread whisk in a couple extra
      eggs

and make an omelet. The extra eggs make up for the extra milk in the mixture.
