Fuel oxygenates are not petroleum hydrocarbons, but they are added to gasoline to promote more complete burning of the fuel by increasing the oxygen content. The most commonly used chemical in this sense is methyl tevtiury-butyl ether (MTBE) (Fig. 9). Its use as a fuel oxygenate means that it is a chemical produced in a very high volume. MTBE is relatively soluble and volatile and appears to be relatively resistant to biodegradation (111). It therefore has the potential to be a widespread contaminant of groundwater, as it is highly mobile.
